Royal Dragoon Guards

The Royal Dragoon Guards was formed on the 1st August 1992, as a result of the amalgamation of The 4th/ 7th Royal Dragoon Guards and the 5th Royal Inniskilling Dragoon Guards.

Both of these were in turn the result of earlier amalgamations in 1922. The Royal Dragoon Guards now carries with it the traditions and history of four of the finest Regiments of the British Cavalry: the 4th Royal Irish Dragoon Guards; the 5th Dragoon Guards; the 7th Dragoon Guards; and the 6th (Inniskilling) Dragoons. All four were raised between 1685 and 1689, during the protracted contest between James II and William of Orange for the English throne.

Challenge

TownsWeb Archiving worked closely with the Museum curatorial staff in order to understand the structure, content and context of each of the predecessor regiments, creating a dynamic historical view for users to engage with.

Using TownsWeb Archiving’s digital collections management system (PastView) we developed a bespoke online collections website, allowing visitors to discover and explore regiments, former titles, battle honours, online collections and personnel records. As well as providing this significant historical aspect of the regiment, our management system also enabled an important focus on the regiment today, including the association, museum opening, shop and donations.

The interactive elements of this website included all data for an associated regiment and year (to enable users to research and filter) an interactive timeline plotting battle honours, former titles, and key information, as well as an immersive virtual tour which was embedded and linked to from a third party.

PastView has provided an admin interface for the Royal Dragoon Guards to manage their ever growing 300+ year history, whilst linking to a new online collections website. This is the window through which users can now easily discover the history of the regiment as well as their current news.
